6 antique brass crotal bells or harness bells on a leather strap. All the bells are a size 6. They are attached by very strong bent wire in a figure of eight. I think they may have been part of a harness or dog collar. The strap has a hole at either end. The bells make a LOT of noise! All ring well. They are a Roman style with the single slot newest. (Tyrolean have a cross opening)

Condition: Good, antique, uncleaned. All bells sound and uncracked.

Crotal bell or Grelot. Bronze C19th century bells worn on animal collars to serve as a warning of their presence. The word crotal is from the Greek "Crotalan", meaning rattle or castanet. The origins of these small bells are ancient. The bells were usually made of brass, bronze or bell metal and had a little iron pea inside to make the sound. During the 19th century they were used on horse harnesses and called "Rumble bells". These graduated bells served as an audible warning to people of the arrival of a horse drawn vehicle. The number on the bell, if there was one, indicated its size and therefore its tone.
Crotal bells, or Grelots as they are called in France, are also used on hunting dog collars, giving the chasseurs an indication of where their hunting dogs are and alerting the prey they are hunting so that it will break cover.
