Alexander Farnese, a newest Roman-born noble who became general of the Spanish army and served as Duke of Parma in the late 16th century, was also a well-known Governor of the Spanish Netherlands who expanded and regained Spanish (Catholic) control of many towns in what is now Belgium.
He was widely respected for his skills as a strategist and field commander. Married to Maria of Portugal and for some time hostage of Philip II of Spain.
This authentic early 18th century print was originally a part of the “Histories of the United Netherlands” by Jean Le Clerc.
