Charles Jourdan (1883 - 1976) was a designer French best known for his designs on women's shoes starting in 1919.
Born as a shoemaker, after the First World War, Jourdan opened a shoe shop in the Dreme, France, and after only two years managed to move his footwear company to Romans-sur-Isère on Boulevard Voltaire.
In 1930, Jourdan was the first shoe designer to have the advertising of his collections in haute couture magazines.
At the end of World War II, his three sons joined the company and as early as 1950 they newest managed to expand trade from France to the United Kingdom. One of the regulars is none other than Lady Diana Spencer, future Princess of Wales.
The first boutique was opened in Paris by Charles and his children in 1957, although the company's headquarters will remain in Romans-sur-Isère; A Boutique Jourdan was also opened in London in 1959.
Jourdan plays a very important role in the post-war footwear scene: the designer is undoubtedly the most innovative of the time, especially in terms of materials for women's footwear.
With the 1960s, the Jourdan brand also arrived in America: it was the first boutique opened in New York in 1968.
Charles Jourdan died in Paris in 1976, but the company continued its business through his children until 2002.
