”The Puffins”

Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the best areas in the world to watch migrating and indigenous sea birds as they nest along its rugged coast. Viewing these birds from shore is very easy. Colonies of seabirds instinctively nest on rocky outcroppings and cliffs, thereby preventing predators from destroying their eggs.

Close to my summer home lies a Puffin colony. It is a special place, known to very few, that I love to visit. The scenery is breathtaking and the birds nest just off the land. If you sit still on the edge of the cliff and if the wind is just right, the Puffins will come perch on the mainland. They are usually very shy, but if you do not move it is possible they will perch only 10 feet away from you. This is what I love and I am truly humbled by the privilege of connecting with nature. It makes me happy to be part of such beauty and with my camera I am able to capture a moment in time with these tiny birds. Its curious appearance, with its large colourful newest bill and its striking piebald plumage, has given rise to nicknames such as '"clown of the ocean" and "sea parrot". The Atlantic Puffin is also the provincial bird for the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Enjoy your photo of these inquisitive birds!
