-------------------
One of the largest predators of all time, the Megalodon shark is estimated to have been between 60 and 80 feet in length and may have weighed over 52 tons. The name Megalodon literally means “big tooth” and Megalodon's massive fossil teeth sometimes exceed seven inches in length. Sharks have existed for over 350 million years, and Megalodon itself appeared about 16 million years ago during the Miocene Epoch. Megalodon was undoubtedly a veracious predator, for its bite marks have been found on fossilized whalebones. It is likely that Megalodon resembled the modern-day Great White shark but was about six times larger, and some believe that these two sharks belong to the same genus. Megalodon mysteriously became extinct about 1.6 million years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. The Megalodon teeth available at Village Silversmith come from the Carolinas.
