Okay, I'll admit it. I smile every time I look at this necklace. It has several of my favorite charms on it, for one, and it tells a story in stone and silver that I love. Let's start with the toaster--a vintage, terrific little work of art all on its own. The coffee cup's one of the best I've seen and that frying pan with eggs, the newest cozy bed, smoke coming out of the chimney into what I choose to think of as a morning twilight sky and, well, the story almost tells itself. All that's needed is a glorious little Adirondack chair and an Austen volume and the morning is complete and serene.
This doesn't even mention the other beautiful materials that make up this piece such as the antique glass. I have access, through a friend and rock shop owner, to the precious remaining assortment of antique glass beads collected over many generations of one Taos Pueblo beading family. This group of beaders had been gathering beads for decades, perhaps for 100 years or more, all the way from the oldest trade beads. When Arlene, the last of their line, was preparing for the end of her time on this earth, she bequeathed her family's treasure to Tillie, my friend. In an act of great generosity that, to this day, I'm not sure I deserve, Tillie has allowed me to buy some of Arlene's family's beads.
You see why I can't help smiling?
