Love is the Doctrine UU Altar newest Plate with Candle Bowl, Flaming Chalice, Home Altar, Minister Pastoral Student Gift, Ready to Ship
newest Perfect for an altar or candle table, this rectangular plate has the words from my favorite UU reading, adjusted for how we say it at our small church. (We substitute 'place' for 'church' because of our zoom meetings). Along with the platter is a small bowl that fits inside. I made this set thinking it would look nice holding candles, with the bowl elevating one, or with a single candle and some seasonal decor on the plate.
The lettering in the rectangular terracotta platter is a deep shiny blackish green that has a slight metallic sheen, and the same glaze is on the bowl. The bowl is made from a lighter colored cank clay, so the green shows a bit more. I impressed the reading first, and then formed the slab of clay into the long platter. See the photos for how it looks and close ups.
This set is a handbuilt rectangular tray, paired with a wheel thrown bowl.
The bowl is 4 inches wide at the top, and 1.5 inches tall.
The plate is 11 inches long, 5 inches wide, and about 1.5 inches tall. The pint canning jar and candle is to help show the size.
The back of the platter is unglazed, and the glaze has been wiped back from the lettering to expose the bare clay on the top.
While the components of this set are all food safe (glaze, clay), because the terracotta is bare in many spots it would absorb oils and liquids, and I would not use it for foods, other than perhaps wrapped candies or crackers. Candles won't hurt these and they aren't flammable.
The dishes can be hand washed in soapy water if they do get dirty. Scrubbing them to get them clean won't hurt them.
“Love is the doctrine of this place.
The quest for truth is it sacrament
And service is its prayer.
To dwell together in peace
To seek knowledge in freedom
To serve humankind in fellowship
This is our covenant.”
