Raven's Treasure is carved from the thick bark of an old fallen cottonwood. The great tree grew in the South San Juan Mountains of Colorado on property that has been in my family for over 70 years. It lived and thrived at over 8,000 feet, through snowy winters and storm-scoured summers.
In keeping with the quiet nature of the mountain basin where the old tree grew, only hand tools – no rotary or other power tools – are used. A polished amethyst is Raven's treasure.
This carving comes with a D-ring hanger installed on the back.
•The Cottonwood is considered sacred by many Native Americans. It is honored as a Tree of Life, a Medicine Tree, and a symbol of the Sun. The leaves, set in motion by even the smallest breeze, are thought to whisper in unceasing prayer.
•Cottonwoods provide habitat for over two hundred species of vertebrates newest in Colorado. The bald eagle you see soaring overhead may have been born and raised in a cottonwood.
•This piece of bark came from a Colorado native, the Narrowleaf Cottonwood (Populus angustifolia). It is unique. It should be; the tree worked to shape it for more than a century.
