Product code: 1800s African Trade Beads Vaseline Yellow Glass newest Strand of 58 Antique Uranium
A strand of 58 yellow vaseline glass African trade beads from the 1800s. I believe they were made in Bohemia (now Czech Republic) and was taken to Africa to be traded for goods and services. These beads are over 120 years old and could be much older. The strand measures approx. 20" and the beads range from 1/2" to 5/8". I did not untie them. There are 58 beads in the strand. Each bead is faceted with newest some of them cut small, larger, different shape and some with a tint of green. They show age and dirt commensurate with age and travel. Although I tried cleaning them, I did not scrub with brush. They leave a slight strange odor on your hands after handling. The string that holds them in the strand does not appear old and aged. They glow bright green under a UV black light indicating the presence of uranium in the glass. The red tag was found with them from the estate of an avid collector of antiques. Weight 3.9 oz.
