The artisanal work of obsidian is a trade that dates back hundreds of years, specifically from Pre-Hispanic times as a highly specialized activity.
Obsidian newest is a volcanic glass that forms when the lava cools abruptly. Thanks to its physical characteristics was used to manufacture cutting tools and various objects and ornaments such as scepters, nose rings, arrows, mirrors, sculptures, jewelry, masks, containers, knives, darts, etc.
Due to its characteristic black color and volcanic origin, it was related to the fire element, it was believed that it came from the underworld and was considered a magical and sacred stone able to catch the bad energies by ancient and current civilizations. Due to its characteristics as raw material and its symbolism, the specialization in the work of obsidian came to have a great development and extended to art, agriculture, religion, cooking, war and architecture, becoming even the economic
sustenance of societies and even today, its exploitation and the manufacture of various objects that are the sustenance of families in areas close to the sites persist.
Near this ancient city of the State of Mexico, Teotihuacán, have been found deposits that were exploited and controlled for years by its inhabitants.
One of these deposits is in Otumba and another -the most important- very close to Pachuca, Hidalgo, is known as the Sierra de las Navajas, famous for its green obsidian.
The most common is black, but there are other colors that range from dark green to light, brown, violet, some blue, red, even white and transparent.
