I never change anything about the ice tongs except to add a coat of Minwax polyurethane for protection. THIS HOLDER HANGS DOWN 13" WHEN IT IS HOLDING A FULL ROLL OF PAPER TOWELS. You can hang it under your kitchen cabinets like I have done with 1 of mine. Check out the last 3 photos and refer to the photos of the black paper towel holder and you can see how I have installed 2 cup holders under the cabinet to hold each of the "scissor type" handles. The other photo shows another one I have in my laundry room and it is red. I also used 2 cup hooks to hold this one. This style of ice tongs is my most popular type and using cup hooks works so well. But you can also use a toggle bolt or chain or rope. It is very easy to change the roll just by pulling out the 2 ends, slipping on a new roll, putting the ends back into the ends of the wooden dowel and it is done! You can also use this towel holder to hold a kitchen towel or any other kind of towels.
