Vintage NYCS Railway Lantern New York Central Systems Clear Globe Etched N.Y.C. Lines Made in USA Handlan St Louis Patented 7-10-28 Dad Gift. The Date inscribed on the bottom of this lantern dates this particular lantern.

Pre-Owned and Loved. This Lantern has a ton of character and charm. Please view photographs to avoid buyer's remorse. This is not a lantern for everyone. It is quirky with its many imperfections making it perfect in our eyes. A very rustic primitive piece. Condition described below.

Different coloured globes represent different purposes. A clear globe was used as hand signal.
No manufacture or Production date. This Lantern pre-dates 1960's. This railway company amalgamated with Erie Railroad in 1960. Lanterns of this make were then hallmarked with the Erie Railroad as well.

CONDITION:
This particular lantern as seen in the images has some real love and it was used by someone who adored his lantern. The newest metal has its original patina, the cage is off kilter, while very steady it does stand on a tilt. We love this making it rustic and cool. The clear has some small chips at the bottom of the globe where it fits into its space and is not seen at all when inserted.
One will never see it in Image 6. The lantern is very sound and perfectly imperfect. Selling as found. Oil pot/Burner and Wick both in great and working condition. EXTRA WICKS can be ordered on-line.
Overall, given its age and use, there is definitely some imperfections which is to be expected with items of this age, but it is what gives it its allure and makes it so attractive. It is an awesome piece and super cool.

DESCRIPTION:
Tommy is a retired railroader with a discerning eye and passion for railway lanterns and other railway paraphernalia. He worked for the railway for over 40 years so he has a inkling on what goes on in the railroad world. This particular lantern has been part of his collection now for many years.
This LANTERN has many marking. The LID is embossed Handlan St. Louis USA. Lower canopy edge is marked NYCS.
At the bottom of the BURNER states all the patent dates beginning in 3-4-13 and last patent reads 7-10-28. The bottom is also marked Handlan St. Louis USA.
The GLOBE in embossed Made in USA and NX in a C. The globe is etched with frosted letter N.Y.C Lines.
BELOW THE BURNER: Embossed KEROSENE OIL ONLY.

This lantern is a "Lo-Top" lantern model which refers to the height of the lid and which is a lower lid to that of the "Hi-Top" Lid which was approximately a couple inches higher. This is a wire bottom base which looks like a cage.

USE:
This style lantern was used by train crew, (conductors or trainmen) to communicate signals to each other at night before radios were introduced approximately in the mid 1960's and onward. Red Globes today are a harder find, white are most common, yellow and green globes are less common and hard to find, but blue are the hardest to find, they are rare. Each colour was used to communicate different signals. All train crew were trained extensively on representation of each colour.
