The main panel reads: "Carl Spitzweg 1808-1885. Maler und Zeichner besinnlicher Motive aus der guten alten Zeit", which translates as "Painter and illustrator contemplative motifs from the good old days". The back panel reads "Carl Spitzweg 1808-1885. Skurrile Figuren aus der liebenswerten Welt des Biedermeier." which translates as: "Whimsical figures from the lovely world of the Biedermeier (an era of cultural growth in Europe)"
