Product code: Victorian Porcelain Fairing Box by Conta and newest Boehme
Victorian Fairing German manufacturer Conta and Boehme made these beautiful fairings as keepsakes for Victorian fairgoers during the years 1860-1890s. Annual fairs in the countryside were special to the Victorians and it was important to come back with a souvenir to place upon their cottage mantels. The "Fairings" were made in hard paste porcelain and the figurals were often whimsical with parodies mocking improprieties and such. They were given as prizes or could be purchased at booths. This one is a particularly beautiful example in that it features a ladies hand gently cradling a beautiful box, one that can hold earrings or other small treasures. The modeling of the hand is lovely and nicely detailed. -This lovely piece newest measures 3 3/4" wide by 4" high. The bottom has the impressed hallmark of Conta and Boehme.
