This stunning set of two glass beer mugs were made by the Finnish glass company Iittala. The company was founded back in 1881 in the village of Iittala in southern Finland and has been renowned for their beautiful and modernist designs since the 1930s and 40s. The company still exists today and continues to make high quality glassware.
They range is known as 'Ulthima Thule' and features a design inspired by melting ice in the forests of Lapland in the far north of Scandinavia. It was first developed and created by the designer Tapio Wirkkala in 1968 who spent a long time developing the glass-blowing techniques required to make the pattern. They are a beautiful example of mid-century Scandinavian design.
The range is still in production today and has been expanded since its inception. These beer glasses however still retain their original packaging which is in aged condition. The style doesn't match packaging used from the late 1970s onwards, and therefore the glasses dates back to the original production in the late 1960s to early 1970s. They have been closely inspected and are still in perfect 'as new' condition.
These beer mugs stand on three small feet that extend from the base and have a solid sturdy handle. This form of the Ultima Thule range is hard to find and isn't currently sold on the Iittala websites.
